First weeks at work
I don’t make everyone tired how was the arrival and
surviving the first days because nothing good would come off it.
One thing is for sure, we were welcomed with love, our work
is not too hard, and really we have everything we need. Except me, who lives
for technical stuff – internet, pc, telephone, well from these nothing works
for me here, so my mood is a bit lower, because as introvert I can’t relax, I
can’t make contact with many friends, this is the biggest challenge for me at
the moment.
The other challenge is obviously the language, but I already
knew that it will be so. It is very exhausting for the brain to change between
four languages every day, and at the end of the day we are totally zombies. And
then learn italian... well.. yeah.
Like I said in the earlier post, the italians are very nice
and open hearted (and open minded too, I guess), and they really want to communicate.
I don’t know if they know what anxiety is. Maybe not. If I want information
about something, but I don’t know how to say it in italian correctly, then
I rather don’t ask anything, because what’s up if it won’t be perfect. I still
can say that I learned the very basics. Maybe the learning goes slow because I
have no time to rest and relax. We don’t have normal italian course, except
those two times. We want Stefania back! But as italians say: we will see. :D
Our collegues are really cool, they are very different
personalities, and mostly it makes our workplace more colorful. Never worser!
You don’t have to be bff with everyone to make everything run smoothly.
Here are my collegues on a meeting, when Margherita Buy actress visited the Casa:
Erica, Pietro, Giovanella, Margherita Buy, Francesco Sciotto (the Pastor of Scicli), Gerardo (our boss)
If I started to write about work, let me introduce the place
where I do my job. The institution is called Mediterranean Hope, Casa Delle
Culture, so Home of the Culture. Don’t think about a culture house, it’s more
like a boarding school. I don’t know
exactly what are those people going through who get here, or what is the
process of the things, but that is sure, african teenagers are hosted here. We
try to get them used to european daily routine and integrate in the culture.
What consists, get up, have breakfast, tidy your room, possibly go to your
lesson (the school didn’t start yet), take out your clothes to wash in time,
etc. Afternoons they have free time, they like to play soccer. At the moment
there are 25-30 boys and about 8-10 girls int he Casa. Most of them can write
and read, and speaks 2 languages at least. So these people are not dumb at all.
Working with refugees is absolutely not like you see it in the
news at home. First, these children escaped from war and or are vulnerable, and never again in their life want to meet agression, because they know
very well what is it like. They are rather afraid of us, than hurting. They
love and respect us, accepted us much earlier than I expected. They are the
same as any youngster in european countries. They love to do sports, listen
music, make fun of each other. They write things on the wall like we did in
camps. They are a little rebellious with the adults, but let’s be honest: did
you want to wash the floor of your room every morning at 14? Of course not… and
most likely you still don’t want to do it every morning. :D They are a little
picky with food, would like to have girlfriend/boyfriend. Instead of what they
went through, I don’t see them broken or sad, howewer sometimes they space out
too, f.e. one day afternoon a guy sat down front of the photos with cages and
was staring on those for an hour. I saw that he is not in high spirits – these
times best not to ask anything, there is psychologist and other collegues in
the Casa, who they can have deep conversations with. (Also we are not allowed
to.) The girls are a bit friendlier, they call our cook, Erica, Mama, and our
boss, Gerardo, Papa. They don’t seem very happy about it but I think they’ll
have to deal with it. :D
A picture about our guys, same time when Oxfam visited. On the roof at work, plus the nice view. :)
On one of the first workdays, there was a religious holiday
and we had bbq at one of the boss’ house. Find a boss in Hungary, who lets 40
refugees in his/her house to eat and have party… plus collegues and relatives.
Imagine, there was no trouble, just food, drumming and dancing. They didn’t
destroy the house or each other, they were not violent with anyone, they just
had fun. I recorded the dance of a guy, just sadly it went to the void with my
phone. :/ It should be seen how those guys dance! If 15 year old boys would
dance so much (and half so good..), then I would already would say that Hungary
turned upside down.
One day we had a chance to participate on a little
celebration what was hosted for a guy, who left the Casa. He spent there one
year, learned italian, and found a job in Milan. The africans don’t need
alcohol to party, a catchy song is enough for them to dance. Boys, girls, the
same! There is no girls’ round dance with handbags, everyone is shakin’ it, or
jumps around, or whatever. As we said with Beni, they are much more relaxed
than us, we looked so stupid frozen down at the side of the dancefloor. :D They
italians are quite relaxed too, it was good to see Erica dancing with a little
girl. :)
Our volunteer mates, the germans
The germans always play cards. :D I’m sad that playing cards
was left out of my childhood, I was never in a company, where the people played
cards a lot. Also somehow I don’t enjoy playing cards, and I like tactical
games. So I don’t play cards with the germans, never mind, that’s it.
Since I was earlier a bit in Germany, I had a bit of
imagination what will the germans be like. Nothing of it came true now. Those
who I met, have humor, can laugh, and relatively easy to become friends with,
they are open(-hearted&minded).
Of course we had small difficulties at the beginning, but we
moved on easily. To be honest I think that the girls are trying very hard to
make us happy. They speak english when it doesn’t go so well for them, they ask
how things go in Hungary, they already try to learn few words in hungarian. We
should talk to them in german a little bit and play cards with them. :D First we
thought that they look down on us and they are pushing us away, but now I see
that it was only the time of getting to know each other.
In our free time we often go to club 97 (we should get a vip
card by now), where we drink something together, and we chat a lot. So I like
to be with them because they are very happy, their eyes are smiling and they
are adorable.
A picture about the night when we had 2 german guests (on the left side of the pic), then Nora, Hanna, Lisa and me :) aswell Beni on the other side of the camera :)
At the sea
I apologize to my readers who were already at the sea. The
next part probably won’t be too interesting for you, but I saw the sea for the
second time in my life; first when I was in the Netherlands, we were at the sea
for a short time, and I was very little, so I don’t remember much of it. So the
sea… is fantastic. My family never made holidays at the sea, and I never
understood why are people so hyper about it. At the sea, at the sea… big water,
nah bumm. Well now I understand. Once I heard a theory that we all are coming
from the waters. I don’t think much of this theory is true, but I still
understand what was the person thinking who made it up. The water is the most
important element for humans, of course we become relaxed from the sound of the
water, and we like to be the near of it. If someone is interested, I’m also a
water sign (in zodiacs), cancer, I don’t know how much it matters in this
topic. So far I made it two times to the shores, first we were at Donnalucata (three times since then..),
wich is a beutiful sea shore with sand. There are stones too, but except a pier,
the sand is dominating there. The sea is calm there and there are no big waves.
The free beach has a good feeling, the shore is clean, the little food places
are cultured (or cultured expensive), and there is also a clean toilet equipped
with everything! For free! Well let’s say that to the 12 euros potatoes it can
come for free.
The other place where we went is called Sampieri, it’s a more
popular place, but the hosting is the same good. At the Sampieri shore are no
stones and rocks, there is only sand. Good big waves are coming, we just went
in, and felt the huge power of the sea, it almost blew us outside. We had a
good bath and jumped in the waves. I don’t think I’ll get bored of swimming in
the sea any time soon. I jumped in the sea like a 5 year old, I hope I can go
back sometime. When I wrote this, it was sunday and it was raining, it was the first colder day. I’m
not complaining, you know I love cold, but I want to swim in the sea again
before spring.
The bus ride back is also good, we came with a bus that stops
at every bush, that was good for seeing other shores and more sicilian houses.
I like the most the bright colored flowers. Not like the hungarian flowers
should be ashamed, but these are wonderful too, I would like to make photos
about flowers; we need a walk for that.
With Nora on one of the flowery street in Scicli :)
That is all I thought for second post, soon I’ll write
again. :)
